Napoleon's whiff of grapeshot was well known during the Napoleonic Wars. He used combined arms skillfully and by making his field artillery shorter and lighter he was able to quickly emplace it and bring it to bear at critical points on the battlefield. His ability to shoot and scoot was a valuable force multiplier and he used it to open attack paths that his Cavalry could exploit.
