England was a Catholic nation and Henry VIII was a very Catholicruler, even named Defender of the Faith. However his wife Catherineof Aragon did not have a son. Henry chose to annul the marriage tomarry someone else. The Pope said no to an annulment becauseCatherine was related to the King of Spain. Finally Henry VIII madehis own religion. When he died, his first daughter Mary tried torestore Catholicism but when Bloody Mary died, Elizabeth I restoredthe Church of England and because she lived a long time, the Churchof England became very strong.
