Why are the walls primed and how to do it correctly?
The upcoming renovation scares almost everyone, but it is especially scary for those who decided to do it on their own. Nothing is impossible, the main thing is to know how to do all the work correctly and really high quality. Particular attention should be paid to the processing of walls and ceilings so that decorative elements stay on them for a long time. Pre-priming will help in this, which has a lot of advantages.
PrimerThe primer is a special composition that, after being applied to the surface, gives it increased adhesive properties, that is, increases the stickiness. This clogs up all microcracks and reduces the risk of new ones. One of the components of soil mixtures is water. It is needed for a more thorough processing of each section of the wall, for penetration even into hard-to-reach places. The liquid evaporates as the primer layer dries, and an even, slightly sticky and rough film remains on the surface.
Why is it beneficial to primer walls?
Applying a primer to walls is not only desirable, but in some cases necessary. Without an adhesion layer, it is impossible to reliably stick non-woven wallpaper intended for painting. Thanks to the primer, the strength of the walls increases, the useful life of the decorative coating is extended. Some types of primer not only have good adhesion characteristics, but also help to cope with the problem of dampness in the room.
Advantages of wall priming:
the film from the primer is a reliable shield against the penetration of steam and moisture;
the risk of cracks and plaster delamination is reduced;
the surface is given a specific stickiness necessary for the subsequent application of decorative elements;
dust is removed from the walls;
the layer of putty becomes more durable;
the primer prevents the formation of mold due to the presence of antimicrobial and antifungal components in the composition;
the degree of gloss of walls covered with varnish or paint increases;
the unpleasant smell of paint is muffled;
surface imperfections are hidden, spots and places previously affected by mold are masked;
reduced paint consumption, especially when processing porous materials.
All of these properties can significantly reduce money costs in the future and reduce the consumption of paint and glue during further processing of the walls. At the same time, a minimum is spent on priming.
How to apply the primer?
To treat the walls with soil compounds, you will need the following inventory:
a container for a primer, equipped with a ribbed section for squeezing excess liquid from the roller;
roller;
brush;
telescopic handle for extending the roller.
It is better to choose a wide brush, and the roller should be with a bristle of medium length. The primers themselves are of several types. There are budget options that have only a basic set of properties, there are more expensive ones that have additional qualities (disinfectants, for example). With limited funds, you can make a soil mixture on your own. It will give the surface extra stickiness, but nothing more.
To prepare a homemade primer, you need to mix PVA glue with water and chalk. As a result, the liquid should lose its transparency and become white. But if possible, it is better to give preference to ready-made mixtures. For the best effect, the primer is applied twice with an interval of 1-2 hours. In the presence of large cracks, it is necessary to seal them with putty.
The primer, if necessary, is diluted with water in accordance with the instructions indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging. The roller is pushed onto the telescopic handle and dipped into the soil mixture, pressed against the ribbed surface. Next, the upper part of the walls is processed with a roller, and then the lower one. Areas behind and around radiators, in corners and other hard-to-reach places are primed with a paint brush.
That's all - the walls are ready for further wallpapering or painting. Let the renovation be a joy!
