What does the 3D printer print from? I mean, what is the content? Has anyone seen a live 3D printer at work?

Yeah ... ;-) How which - although the principle is the same (gradual layering / hardening of the material), there are several technologies. Such "for home use" prints either from ABS or PLA ("plastic"), either from an endless "wire" (from a spool - eg RepRap) or from rods of "some length" (from a magazine - eg Fabster) . What more exactly do you want - or, to know? ;-) The charge costs about 1,000, - - 1,800, - per kilo of ABS, PLA is a bit cheaper (it also has worse properties - printed and mechanical for the print). Print - the size of the printed object is limited by the size of the printer (for the "cheap" ones it is approx. 20x20x20 cm). If this size is insufficient, it is possible to divide the whole (object) into structural parts and then connect them. The printing program (control printer) is included, the price also includes "some" software for creating "drawings" (but it is possible to work in about any CAD). It is possible to print in several quality levels - from "preview" to final (this corresponds to the printing speed). ;-) For now (price, accuracy) I would see the use for modellers (they must cheer), maybe architects (previews / models of buildings) and especially design-engineers (models / previews, but also small series production of parts for which the material is suitable). It has one "defect" in beauty - 3D printers ("common") can print from only one material (ie one color) at a time, color change is possible only by changing the material - which in turn carries inaccuracies in the connection. Thus, there is no danger of any choice of shades (basically about 6-8 colors are supplied) - and, unfortunately, the material of each color has slightly different properties - including, for example, melting temperature (printing works so that the material is melted in the nozzle, as semi / liquid applied-melted on the already printed part) - so the color change, if the mechanical properties of the printout are not to be significantly impaired, presupposes calibration of the printer (problem with connection to the already printed part). The shuffling will be "higher level". Of course, it is then possible to color the finished print in any way (for a given material) in any shade.
