Can they release a life convict for good behavior?

Someone told me they released someone sentenced to life in prison for about 35 years for good behavior. Possible? Or is he in prison for life just before he dies?

When sentenced to life imprisonment, a prisoner may apply for parole after 20 years - but is not automatically entitled to it.
