Second monitor - how does it work?

I decided to replace the graphics card and connect the PC with an HDMI cable to Smart TV so that I could use a larger screen to watch some shows. But I can't imagine switching between monitors or both at the same time. I have a key for it on a netbook, but on a PC ...? Thank you
