I quote from a technical drawing: Dimension lines They are parallel to the dimensioned dimension and are bounded by boundary arrows (outer, inner - we prefer inner) or a boundary line (the boundary line replaced previously used dots). Dimension lines must not be aligned with contour or axis lines. We place dimension lines and dimensions outside the image and draw them with a thin line.
