The mini antenna built into the PayPass cards is activated in the immediate vicinity of the card reader terminal and transmits the data needed to complete the transaction. However, cards with the PayPass function can only be used to pay without contact in the immediate vicinity of the terminal, thus eliminating the possibility of unwanted transactions. I don't think the latter is true anymore, because it's enough to hear about a lot of abuse. :( This is what the card looks like when it is scanned.
