How to Change the Time on a Computer
If you’ve just moved to a new time zone, or if you’ve just had your battery replaced, chances are you need to change or adjust the time on your computer. Here’s how to do it on both on the Windows and Mac OS.
Windows
To adjust the date and time settings on your Windows, you need to have administrative access. Ask the administrator to access this for you if you are not.
Click on the Start menu and choose Settings. A subfolder will open. Click on Control Panel.
The Control Panel window will open. It will contain a number of icons with text underneath them. Look for the Date/Time icon, and double click.
A quicker way to access Date/Time is looking at the rightmost side of the Taskbar. Hover your mouse over the displayed time on the Taskbar and double click.
A new window will appear. The left side will display a clock face reflecting the computer’s current time, and the left side will display the computer’s current date. Beneath the clock face, there is a row of text boxes displaying the numerical equivalent of the time.
Click on each box and type on the appropriate time, minutes and even seconds if you like.
Choose between “AM” and “PM” after adjusting the time.
Click the OK or the Apply Button.
Close all the windows.
Mac
Click on the Apple menu. Go to Control Panel, and then click on Date & Time
There will be text boxes for the month, date and year. There are also text boxes for the current time being displayed on your computer.
Highlight each detail and change it using either the up and down numbers or typing in the correct time.
Set the Time Zone by clicking on the Set Time Zone Button and choosing the closest major city nearest your location from the dropdown menu.
Click on Set Time Now. By doing this, you can set your time from the Internet by clicking on the Server Options button and choosing a server.
You can put the digital clock on the Finder menu if you click that option.
CMOS Battery
The CMOS battery is the battery used by the computer to keep the time updated even if your computer is turned off. If you find that your computer keeps displaying the wrong time even after several adjustments, you may need to have your CMOS battery replaced.
