How to Make Paper Mache
Paper mache is available in a variety of craft stores and is perfect for all kinds of different artistic projects including sculpture and pinata making. However, paper mache can be costly in the long term if you find that you are using a lot of it, so it may be beneficial to make your own with ingredients that you can find around the house. Here are some different recipes you can use to make paper mache of varying quantities and durability.
Use Simple Materials
The most common type of homemade paper mache involves simple household materials like flour, water, and newspaper. First you mix the water and flour until a type of paste forms. Then you can dip the strips of newspaper (or any other lightweight paper) into the paste one by one to create your own paper mache. This technique can be used to create layer upon layer of paper mache which makes any project you are working on stronger and stronger with each additional layer. Also, this technique is perfect for projects which require a more delicate touch, as the newspaper is very easy to work with - although it may take quite some time to dry completely.
Other Methods of Making Paper Mache
Another method that can be used to make paper mache is with wallpaper paste, water, and newspaper (or any other lightweight paper). Although the wallpaper paste may cost more than flour, it is useful for projects that require a stronger paper mache. Mix three parts of water with one part of wallpaper paste, stir it well and then add the paper strip by strip. Mold the paper into your desired shape and wait for it to dry. As with the previous technique, you can use multiple layers for even more strength.
Finally, you can also make paper mache from white glue, water, and newspaper. This technique will likely be the most costly, but it produces a paper mache that provides you with a mixture between durability and pliability for some excellent results when it comes time to sculpt. Mix one part water with two parts of glue and use the same dipping procedure outlined above for the best results.
