How to Make a Paper Hat
Ever had one of those days that you just needed to make a paper hat? Impress your kids or revisit your childhood by learning how to make a paper hat. The following instructions will make you a typical “pirate hat” although you can also fashion it to be other kinds of hats using art materials or adjusting the folding.
What You Need
Newspapers
Tape (optional)
Scissors (optional)
Art material (optional)
Making a Paper Hat
Get a whole newspaper page (the sheet that’s equivalent to two pages). Fold it in half, the default fold of newspapers.
Position the folded newspaper with the folded part on top, away from you, with the flaps nearer your hands.
Fold the paper again horizontally, and unfold. The crease should delineate the middle part of the paper.
Take the two upper corners and fold them towards each other, meeting in the middle (as marked by Step Three). There should be a rectangular strip at the bottom after folding.
Take the upper layer of the rectangular strip and fold it upwards, overlapping the two triangular flaps.
Turn the paper over and do the same to the other rectangular strip, making sure that it is aligned with each other.
By Step Six, you already have a pirate hat.
Take the bottom left corner of the hat, and fold it partly towards the center. Do the same with the bottom right corner of the hat.
To secure the folded corners, fold the bottom edge of the hat upwards, tucking in the folded flaps of your paper hat. If you’re having trouble tucking those corners in, you can simply use tape to secure them.
Step Eight is done to adjust the hat to fit perfectly on your head, so adjust the corners accordingly. By Step Nine, the paper should resemble the papal hat.
Once you’re done with the hats, you are now free to design it in any way you wish. Designs can be girly, sparkly, thematic or even downright kooky. Paper hats are inexpensive toys that can bring kids a lot of joy! Try making them with your kids on birthday parties or rainy days.
