Tomlinson, an American computer programmer, introduced the concept of the first electronic message or email in 1981. During the invention, he used the @ sign along with the email address . At the time, he was working as an engineer at an organization in Boston. Ray Tomlinson's full name is Raymond Samuel Tomlinson. He was born in 1941 in New York, USA. He studied at a college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. At that time he also joined an internship at IBM. After graduating in 1973, he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1985 with a master's degree in electrical engineering. In 1986, he started his career at a technology company called Bolt , Beranek & Newman (now BBN). While working there, he invented the Tenex operating system, which included the ARPANET network control protocol. He wrote the first file transfer program in Arpanet.
