How to Throw a Knuckleball
Unpredictability is a key characteristic that every baseball pitcher should possess. The knuckleball happens to be at the center of that unpredictability. Once it’s thrown, the batter will have a hard time guessing which direction the ball will go, en route to a possible strikeout. The pitch, despite of its “erratic” nature, is quite easy to execute. You just need to learn its designated grip, stroke, and follow-through to throw a successful knuckleball.
I. The Knuckleball Grip
The secret of the knuckleball pitch is in the way the ball is held. Grip the ball’s top portion using only the tips of your index, ring, and middle fingers. Push down hard on the ball, so you can maneuver it before it’s thrown. Position your thumb at the bottom of the ball for support. When all four fingers are in position, your next target is the windup.
II. The Knuckleball Windup
knuckleballNext to the grip, learning the windup is essential. If you throw the ball using the wrong stroke, your pitch will go haywire. You should, first, plant your dominant leg to the ground. Raise the other foot while you bring the pitching arm back. Your body should be twisted, going to the pitching arm’s direction, and bent slightly backwards. In one swift motion, bring your foot down, as you move your body and pitching arm forward, producing much force.
III. The Knuckleball Throw
When you’re about to throw the ball, keep your wrist and arm steady. The trick is to not apply spin on the ball, so it will make an unexpected curve right before it reaches the batter. Adding spin lessens the curve, making the pitch more predictable, especially for experienced players.
IV. The Follow-Through
After releasing the ball, all your fingers should be stretched out, pointing towards the home base. Both your feet should be aligned while the pitching arm should intersect your body’s direction. Having the correct follow-through increases your control over the ball, so remember to apply it correctly right after throwing the ball.
Practice and Practice Some More
The knuckleball may be simple to perform, but tons of practice is required for you to perfect it. Always remember to check the direction of your pitch and match it with your pitching stroke. If the ball doesn’t curve much, find the stroke’s problem areas and remedy them. You’ll soon make opposing batters scratch their heads in disbelief.
