This is an example of a reflex action. The reflex action occurs as follows: ( i) Receives the sensation of pain of the receptor located in the skin of the lower leg. ( ii) This pain sensation travels from the receptor through the neurons to the spinal cord. ( iii) The response from the spinal cord reaches the carotid or effector i.e. the leg muscles through the external neurons. ( iv) The leg muscles then contract , causing the leg to bend and move away from the spine.
