The main technological difference between the second generation and the third generation is the use of third generation packet switching data transmission instead of circuit switching data transmission. In May 2001, NTT Decoma launched the first non-commercial and experimental 3G network in Tokyo, Japan. In this generation BSNL modern mobile technology HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) is implemented. The W-CDMA system is now known as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) . The CDMA and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) standards have been greatly improved , including the use of high speed data transfer and 3G mobile multimedia data in the third generation . Although WCDMA 's rival EV-DO technology was introduced in South Korea and the United States in 2002, the use of WCDMA technology continued to grow in Japan in late 2002 and in Italy and the United Kingdom in 2003 . In 2006, 3rd generation network users stood at 295 million , which was only 9% of Mate Mobile users. About two-thirds of users use WCDMA technology and one-third use EV-DO standard.
