The Manipuris are one of the indigenous communities of Bangladesh. The ancient sovereign state and the present northeastern Indian state of Manipur is their original home. In ancient times the Manipuri community was known as Kangleipak , Kangleipung , Kanglei , Meitrabak , Mekhali etc. The Manipuris were also called Meitei. During the reign of Maharaja Garib Newaz (1809-1847) the missionaries who came from Sylhet considered this place as Manipur and considered it as a place mentioned in the Mahabharata. In this way, the name of the main inhabitants of this place became Manipuri. Subsequent investigations revealed that present -day Manipur and the Manipur mentioned in the Mahabharata were not the same place. Manipuris came and settled in Bangladesh at different times due to war , struggle and other social and political reasons. Such migration first started (1819-1825) during the Manipur-Burma War. An investigative study reveals that the exact period of this war began earlier in the eighteenth century and during the reign of King Bhagyachandra (164-189). However, during the Manipur-Burma war, migration increased at a tremendous rate. At this time Manipur came under siege and the Burmese occupiers ruled the country for about 7 years. At that time Manipur king Chaurajit Singh took refuge in Sylhet along with his two brothers Marjit Singh and Gambhir Singh , bringing with him a lot of wealth. They built a palace at Mirzajangal in Sylhet, the ruins of which still exist. Manipuri settlements were formed at that time in Kasba of Brahmanbaria , Durgapur of Mymensingh and Tejgaon area of Dhaka. However, in the course of time these settlements have been wiped out. At present Manipuris are living in greater Sylhet. They live in Sylhet city and suburbs , Kamalganj of Moulvibazar district , Srimangal , Kulaura and Baralekha police stations , Chunarghat of Habiganj and Chhat of Sunamganj. According to the 1991 census, the number of Manipuris in Bangladesh is about 25,000. Of these, 13,000 Manipuris live in Moulvibazar, 6,000 in Sylhet and 4,000 in Habiganj. Other census data were not released.
