Indians used the novel as a powerful medium to criticise what they considered as defects in them and to suggest remedies writers like Viresalingnam used the novel mainly to propogate their ideas about society among a wider readership. Novels also helped in establishing a relationship with the past. Many of them told thrilling stories of adventures and intrigues set in the past. Glorifying the past created a sense of national pride among their readers. People from all walls of life could read novels so they shared a common language. It created a sense of collective belonging on the basis of one’s language. The ways the characters spoke in a novel began to indicate their region, class or caste.
