I suppose you could but any external drives are going to be slower than internal drives. Get ready for that. I haven’t tried a dual boot system before but you could probably configure your BIOS to boot from a different drive pretty easily. I’ve used win 7 and while I didn’t perform any engineering benchmarks, I did notice a marked improvement over Vista. Also expect between 2–5 hardcore Linux guys to come along to berate you for using Windows. That happens everywhere.
