It’s been a few years since I’ve read it, but didn’t the police captain speak about it at length with Raskolnikov? I remember them discussing the most important details of the article, mainly Raskolnikov’s belief in an “ubermensch” type who could create his own morals that transcended the morals of society, merely because he was the “ubermensch.” The point of the discussion was to show why the police captain believed Raskolnikov was guilty of murdering the old lady; if the latter believed that certain great men were above the rules, it was likely he considered himself above the rules as well. This would justify his killing of someone “beneath” him. The point was clear and the article unnecessary. I doubt Dostoevsky ever wrote it.
