Defamation is a type of crime that can be both criminal and civil. If the accused is found guilty after a defamation suit is filed in a criminal court , he is liable to imprisonment or fine. On the other hand , if there is a case in the civil court and the plaintiff wins in that case, he can collect money from the defendant as compensation. Pursuant to Section 499 of the Bangladesh Penal Code, a person who, for the purpose of defamation or knowingly defaming or using intentional words or symbols for reading or with the help of visual imagery, formulates or expresses a slander against a person in such a manner that the slander will tarnish that person's reputation. The person will be considered to have defamed. Section 500 of the Bangladesh Penal Code, which provides for defamation, states that a person convicted of this offense may be sentenced to two years' imprisonment without parole or a fine or both.
