Anathem, by Neal Stephenson. It’s not as laser-y as Hyperion—in fact the first three-fourths of the book have nothing to do with outer space. But there is a spaceship and the last part of the book that deals with it is one of the most awesome things I have ever read.

Last Answer : Oh, the first thing that comes to mind for me is the communicator on Star Trek. So small! And now? Mobile phones are that small. I understand that scientists are trying to come up with an actual doohickey for medicine that does what the tricorder did on Star Trek.

Last Answer : Asimov did it with his Foundation series. Heinlein did it in some of his longer novels. And of course JK Rowling did it in all of the Harry Potter books. It’s certainly possible to do, but you have to spend an enormous amount of time on consistency and detail, or it all falls apart.
