Using a balance, what is the minimum number of weighings required to guarantee being able to find both the heaviest and the lightest? How can the method be generalized for any even number of coins? Some people find this really easy and some (me included) have trouble with it Take a deck of cards. Turn 20 of them face up and shuffle into the deck. Have someone count off 20 cards from the top and hand you the remainder of the deck. What can you do to make sure that the number of face up cards that you have equals the number of face up cards in the 20 cards.
