answer:Well the idea of grubby looking pirates isn’t far off. They spent a long time at sea without adequate resources, and had to make do with their clothing, which got worn out. Some of them probably shaved and cut their hair, but I’m guessing that at some point, some probably didn’t care anymore, at least not the ship hands. Different story for the members higher in the hierarchy, I believe. Being a pirate meant you had the law on your ass all the time, and contrary to popular belief, treasure and such was not the highest on their list. When they could, food and medical supplies were their priority. Now that’s not to say they didn’t steal valuables and all; I mean that’s what they were in it for. Pirates did a lot of illegal trading and other types of contraband, but it wasn’t easy for them to spend what they got without someone alerting the authorities. prolly in the hopes of a reward from the high council haha That doesn’t mean they always dressed like slobs though; the most important figures of a pirate crew tried to dress in a way that showed class, as to further convince trade and social authority. When they sacked some ship, clothing were also on their list. They took what they could get, and even if they looked like clowns with feathery hats and fluffy vampire blouses that they looted from some official government ship, they maintained those as best they could, since they knew they might have to keep them for a long while. But actually, I’m just kind of guessing here. Obviously, hats and handkerchiefs were a must on a ship, to protect them from the intense day heat they so often encountered. You know, like baseball players. Wooden legs and hook hands, I highly doubt that…to suffer such injuries like amputation without medical assistance most likely guaranteed death, or severe disability, especially back then. And while pirates did capture exotic animals like parrots or monkeys, this was usually to sell the animals, and not keep them as pets. My guess is they looked like bikers, only without coats including so many unnecessary zippers.
