For a first visit, I would suggest the Cliffs of Moher, then bein based in Killarney from where you can tour the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula and Muckross House. There are great “singing pubs” in Killarney with wonderful live music. These are all accessible from Shannon Airport. Further north, the Galway Peninsula and Connemara are wild and lovely. And near Dublin, Wicklow and Cork are worth visiting. We once rented a cottage in Galway for a week then spent a few days at a B&B in Klllarney. There are numerous charming villages all over Ireland. You can get cool and rainy weather at any time of year in Ireland but I would say that May through September are your best bets.
