The Moto X 2014, for example, has a rollout of KitKat going on right now for Verizon. The carriers handle the updates – not Google. And since Android is open, the phone manufacturers have a tendency to destroy it and make proprietary changes (Samsung’s Touchwiz, for example). So, throwing a new vanilla KitKat build on a Samsung phone will come with challenges. You’re going to have to root, etc.
