answer:Go into Control panel, and look at Default Programs. That area is what tells the system what programs are supposed to open files with certain suffixes (like XLS or XLSX for Excel, for example). It sounds like somehow the setting for Excel got corrupted. Find XLSX on the list in Default Programs, and follow the steps to reassign it the proper default.
