Conversion to any stream of Judaism requires a period of study under Rabbinic supervision followed by examination before a beit din (a rabinnic court with three judges). It is not uncommon for a year to elapse between the first exploration of conversion and immersion in a mikvah to mark the official deed. Ideally, the length of the period of study depends on the level of knowledge of the potential convert, how quickly that person learns, and how well the supervising rabbi knows them.
