Billed as the "Greatest Free Show on Earth," there is no charge to the party goers attending the hundreds of parades in New Orleans. As the season kicks off Jan. 6, the group Phunny Phorty Phellows take its traditional streetcar ride up St. Charles Avenue, signaling the official start of the season. The Phorty Phellows, an historic Mardi Gras organization, this year hosts the king and queen of Zulu, the traditional black Carnival organization that is celebrating its 100th anniversary. There are thousands of people along the parade route with food, drinks, king cakes and "throws" to please the crowds.
