How to Create a Collage PosterCollage is an art form that is both derivative and creative. By layering images that you have not created yourself, you create an entirely new piece of art. Collage is a very relaxing, solitary form of art, from thumbing through magazines, books and newspapers for images to moving them around on your background until you're happy with the composition and gluing them in place just so. Before you begin the process of collage, you need to understand a little about the elements of art.Composition, line, shape, space, value, color and texture are the elements of art, and each comes into play when creating a truly beautiful collage. Composition is the balance of the final image. If there's too much going on in one corner of the collage and nothing going on in another, the piece will feel unbalanced. Balance doesn't mean symmetrical, necessarily. It means that the colors, lines, shapes, values and empty spaces are used in such a way that the piece feels right and looks even.Begin your collage by thumbing through old magazines, books and newspapers. Cut out images that you either find beautiful or that "speak" to you for one reason or another. As you cut them out, a theme will emerge in your mind. Begin placing the images together to create new images, such as placing a bird on top of an elephant or a hand pointing to the moon. Continue building layers of images until you're happy with the composition and the theme. When ready, use white craft glue to permanently affix the images to the background. When your collage is complete, cover with a coat of white glue or Mod Podge to ensure the images stay put and to give the final product a little sheen.
