There are currently four species confirmed, with six more underresearch. Identified in 1929, they belong to the Animalia Kingdomand the Mollusca Phylum, the Cephalopoda Class and the OctopodaOrder. They are in the Octopodidae family, and the genus ofHapalochlaena. The Blue-lined octopus species is Hapalochlaenafasciata (fasciata being the species part of the binomial), theGreater blue-ringed octopus is Hapalochlaena lunulata, the Southernblue-ringed or Lesser blue-ringed octopus is Hapalochlaenamaculosa, and Hapalochlaena nierstraszi doesn't seem to have a"popular" name, though it was originally identified in 1938.
