During World War I, the conventional-wheeled armored car wasimpractical for use on the battlefields of France because of itsinability to negotiate the rough terrain on which it needed to bedeployed. As a result, tracked vehicles were devised that couldhandle the adverse ground-conditions, although their slow speedprevented them from having a decisive impact during the war.
