One pile has 2 parts of the total and the other has 1 part→ 2 + 1 = 3 parts are needed to divide up the total.12 / 3 = 4→ each part contains 4→ to divide 12 in the ratio of 2:1, you split it 2 parts × 4 perpart : 1 part × 4 per part= 8 : 4
