The material should have sufficient strength to carry prescribed loads.

2) Serviceability: Material should be selected in such a way that it should provide the optimum serviceability

3) Aesthetically pleasing: The material used for the construction purpose should be aesthetically pleasing in appearance. It should be attractive to look at, or pleasing to experience, determine its aesthetic appeal.

4) Economical: Cost the material used for construction should be low as possible.
