You’re talking about an extended warranty. The short answer? No. Most definitely not. Most extended warranties are a serious waste of money. If you can afford to pay some company a monthly charge or a single big payment …why not take that money and pay yourself? Put that money into a car maintenance “Slush Fund” *you* have control over and use as *you* see fit …without any stipulations. I mean, let’s face it, your car will need to have maintenance done to it …not a matter of “if” but “when”. Think about it: these warranty companies make money by selling these warranties they know …through the actuarial information they collect …won’t be used either at all or nowhere near their stated levels of coverage. If you buy one of these warranties you’re betting against yourself …basically saying the new vehicle I just bought is going to be a maintenance headache …and the warranty companies just lead you on in your thinking because they know better. People who erroneously argue they get “free” repairs or regular maintenance or whatever the extended warranty offers are so wrong in their thinking. It boils down to this: for the term of the warranty, do you think you will garner maintenance costs equal to or in excess of the cost of the warranty? And when you buy an extended warranty that is *exactly* what you’re thinking. And the companies selling extended warranties *know*, based on actuarial information, the majority of warranty buyers do not …don’t even come close …and this is how these warranty companies make lots of money ….at your cost. Are there occasions where your repair costs might make an extended warranty a good deal? Sure, I’ll bet someone will respond or comment with their experience where it was worth it to have the warranty; but that would be the exception.
