Shaktipith is one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. In the shrines named Shaktipeeth, various parts of the body of Goddess Dakshayani Sati are preserved in stone. Usually 51 Shakti Peeths are mentioned. These Shakti Peeths are scattered all over the Indian subcontinent. Kalighat in Calcutta , Bakreshwar in Birbhum , Nalhati ; Bhabanipur in Bangladesh is one of the important powerhouses of Bengal. In order to take revenge on Mahadev in Satya Yuga, Daksha Raja organized a yajna called Jupiter. Daksha was angry that his daughter Sati Devi married ' Yogi ' Mahadev against her (Daksha's) wishes. Daksha invited almost all the gods and goddesses except Mahadev and Sati Devi. Despite Mahadev's reluctance, Sati Devi attended the ceremony along with Mahadev's followers. But Sati Devi was not given due respect as she was not an invited guest. Moreover, Daksha insulted Mahadev. Sati Devi could not bear this insult of her father towards her husband and sacrificed herself by raising the power of her yogi. The bereaved Mahadev became angry and performed the Yajna Yajna and carried the corpse of Goddess Sati on his shoulders and started the worldwide cataclysm dance. At the request of other deities, the dance was stopped and Vishnu, with his handsome chakra, dissected the corpse of Goddess Sati. The body parts of Sati Mata fell in different parts of the Indian subcontinent and the holy shrine became known as Shaktipeeth.
