How to Soundproof a Room
There are many reasons for one to soundproof a room. Recording studios or meeting rooms require absolute silence, meaning no noise should come in or out of the room. Learn the different ways you can soundproof a room.
New Construction
The best way to soundproof a room is to do it along with construction. You will have a more completely soundproofed room this way. Better still, have a professional insulation company to come look over the room you intend to soundproof.
Put fiberglass insulation batting in the walls. If packed tightly and densely, you get more soundproofing. However, remember that you need to use this for temperature insulation, which would be useless if too tightly packed.
Hang the drywall on one side of all the stud walls.
If you want a cheaper alternative, you can simply buy soundproofing products. They come in the form of panels that can be hung according to instructions. Follow it up by hanging drywall.
After Construction
The quickest to soundproof a room after construction is to remove the drywall from one wall of the room. Buy soundproofing products in the form of panels.
Locate the areas between the studs near the walls. Cut smalls in the drywall and fill it with expandable foam insulation, which can come in small spray cans. You can buy bigger ones or smaller ones depending on your needs.
There are manufactured wall covering materials that are ready to use soundproof panels. They can even blend with your room’s interior design as they come in a lot of colors and they are usually paintable.
You can make your room’s surfaces more textured to help block out sound vibrations. You can use carpeting, acoustic spray texture or installing egg cardboard boxes on your wall.
Windows, Ceilings and Floors
Windows must be double or triple-hung vinyl-framed windows. For a cheaper alternative, you can always use heavy drapes instead.
You can also cut out a soundproofing panel for a wall and cut it out in the window’s size.
Install a sound-deadening matting on your ceiling or use suspended acoustic tile ceiling. Sound-deadening mats can also be installed under carpets to minimize noise on the floors.
