How to Water a Lawn
The key to a healthy and wonderful lawn is proper watering. But while it is important to maintain your grass healthy, it is also crucial for any lawn owner to learn how to water his lawn the right way. Keep your lawn more environment-friendly by reducing water use while keeping your lawn healthier and greener. Here are some basic techniques you can try:
Water only when necessary.
Watering your lawn excessively can watering lawnbe detrimental to its health and can lead to the creation of fungus and other diseases. Before watering, take note of the many factors involved such as the wind, humidity, and temperature, among others.
If you think your lawn needs more water, simply look at the grass. It only needs water if it has a blue-gray tint. Also, observe if the older leaf blades are curled up or wilted — these are clear signs that you need some watering to do.
Water early in the morning.
Some water evaporates before it even touches the ground, especially if you use sprinklers. This is especially true if you water your lawn particularly on a windy and hot day. To effectively water the grass, water early in the morning, between 4 A.M. and 9 A.M.
Encourage deep root growth.
Shallow waterings often lead to weed germination and may cause the roots of the grass to grow shallow, leading to other problems such as droughts and several diseases. Water your glass only when needed to encourage the roots to grow deeper and to allow water to leak into the root zone.
Let Mother Nature do the dirty work.
If you are expecting rain later in the day or in the next few days, then turn off your sprinkler or set it properly so you won’t waste water. To know how much rain you got, use a rain gauge and water accordingly if necessary.
Use a rain barrel.
Harvest rain water properly by using a rain barrel. Rain water from the gutters of your house can supply enough water for your lawn. Using rain barrels also help the environment especially in reducing the amount of polluted water that may get into oceans, lakes and rivers.
Be aware of any watering restrictions.
Many communities now have acted on water shortages by limiting residents on the frequency by which they can water their lawns. Make sure to abide by these restrictions or talk to your community leaders if needed.
Remember that it is best to water deeply and infrequently than lightly and often. Follow all these tips and you’ll surely have a lawn to behold.
