Gravitational acceleration is the rate of increase of velocity of an object falling from above. Gravity causes an object released from above to run towards the surface, and the closer it gets to the surface (i.e. the center of the earth), the faster its fall speed increases. The rate at which velocity increases per second during a fall is called 'gravitational acceleration' in physics.
