Hockey is an ancient and popular sport. The game is played between two teams with 11 players in each team on a flat grass field and with the help of curved sticks and balls on artificial turf. During the game, the goal of each team is to move the ball with the help of the stick and enter the opponent's goal boundary and score. To distinguish it from ice hockey, the game is commonly called field hockey. The hockey field is rectangular and measures 100 × 60 yards. The weight and circumference of the ball used in hockey is 5.5 ounces and 23.5 cm respectively. Although there is disagreement about the origin of hockey, sports researchers believe that hockey originated in Greece about five thousand years ago. Hockey can also be seen in a pyramid in Egypt three thousand years ago. Further evidence of this can be found in a mural in Europe in 1122 AD. Although the game originated in Greece, the game of hockey was completed in England. The Wimbledon Hockey Club of London, founded in 183, gave the game a definite look and feel from a long period of turmoil. England defeated Ireland 5-0 in the first international match in 1895. Hockey was included in the Olympics in 1906. In 1942, the International Federation of Hockey was formed in Brussels. It is the highest governing body of hockey. The first Hockey World Cup was held in 1958. Countries like Pakistan , India , Australia , Holland , England , Korea , Malaysia etc. are quite proficient in playing hockey. Bangladesh got acquainted with hockey during the British period. Hockey was introduced in Dhaka in 1905 under the patronage of Nawab Sir Salimullah. However, the game was limited to their family boundaries. Football is more popular with the people of the region than hockey. Despite this, due to the relentless efforts of some sports patrons and organizers, the game progressed a lot. During World War II, a member of the Gurkha Regiment, 'Hockey Magician' Dhyan Chand played an exhibition match in Dhaka, which drew a large crowd.
