How to Coach Volleyball
You may be a former volleyball varsity player or a new face in the sport, but as long as you have passion for the game, then you can become a volleyball coach. As a volleyball coach, you need to have a full grasp of the game and the charisma to inspire your team to excel in competition. If you would like to coach volleyball, here are some things you should keep in mind:
Prepare your team for battle.
To be successful in this sport, you have to have a mastery of all the rules involved. Review all the rules with your team and make sure that all the players know their respective roles for your squad.
Also, to be able to play the game in the highest level, you should teach your players the importance of conditioning. You want to win games and in order to do that you need to have stamina and endurance.
Practice the basics like serving and receiving by setting up targets for players to aim for. Place five to six barrels or cans all around the court and get your players to attack these areas on your command. You should also concentrate on spiking and aiming to empty parts of the court while avoiding potential blockers. (Learn how to serve a volleyball)
After practicing, you may want to toughen up your time more by joining preseason tournaments. The experience of playing other teams will come in handy come the official tournament as it will test your team’s resiliency when faced with new competition. You can also use these practice sessions to train the rookies in your team and sharpen their skills.
Inspire your team to victory.
Coaching does not only involve spearheading substitution patterns and determining starting lineups but also developing your team’s character. While you need to make tactical decisions during the game by communicating with your players, you also need to teach them what honesty, responsibility and hard work are all about.
Talk to your team before each game or better yet, get an experienced player to promote these important values and to share some key insights on how to win in game situations.
Consult the code of ethics as provided by the American Volleyball Coaches Association to know more of your responsibilities as a volleyball coach. As the head of your team, you are not only a bench tactician but also a mentor so be a role model at all times.
