How to Serve a Volleyball
If you want to be an awesome volleyball player, you have to learn the right skills and tactics to lead the game. One important skill you should hone is serving a volleyball, so the ball will be put into play. If you don’t know how to do this yet, here are two volleyball serve tactics you should master.
What You’ll Need:
Volleyball
Volleyball court with net
Opponent or partner
Rubber shoes
Doing An Overhand Serve
Determine which is your dominant hand, or your serving hand. If you are right-handed, use your right arm or foot for the steps below, but if you’re left-handed, use your left.
serve
Line your feet at least a shoulder’s distance apart, your dominant foot ahead of the other. The hips and shoulders should be aligned with the volleyball net.
Put your arms out in front of you, as straight as you can. Don’t bend them.
Hold the top of the ball with the dominant hand’s palm and the bottom with the palm of your opposite hand. Don’t let your arms or elbows touch any other part of the body.
Cock your serving arm back, just next to your head, then toss the volleyball up using your opposite hand’s palm. Don’t use your fingers, though. Toss the ball at least two feet in the air.
Use your opposite foot to step forward, then hit the ball’s bottom using your dominant hand’s palm, giving it a spin that will make it go farther and higher. Make sure your wrist is straight and your hand open.
After you’ve struck the ball, use the momentum and run to your defensive position.
Doing A Jump Serve
Go to position, standing behind the back line. When you serve, you will be approaching the line.
Start by putting your dominant foot forward, taking a three step approach, just like when you do a spike. The sequence must be: dominant, opposite, dominant.
Check where your opponent or opponents are standing. Make sure you aim and hit where it’s open.
Toss the ball in the air, in front of you, using either with your right or left hand, or both. This is an overhand throw, so be sure that the toss is overhand. Throw ir high enough, but make sure you can still reach it.
When the time is right, jump so you won’t miss the ball.
Extend your dominant arm and hit the ball with the palm of your hand. Make sure you connect with the center, for a good throw.
Some Tips
Be comfortable with tossing the ball.
Avoid punching or “slapping” the ball. Just hit it hard using the palm of your hand.
If you want to increase your serve’s power, take a bigger step forward.
Keep practicing, and you’ll perfect these two volleyball service tactics.
Serving a volleyball can be tricky at first, but with enough practice and determination, it won’t be very difficult. Just follow these steps and you’ll do these moves great!
