How To Do An Alley Oop
The alley oop is an offensive strategy in basketball that can send a crowd to their feet, cheering. It seems simple, but the truth is it’s very challenging because it requires precision, a good strategy and just enough subtlety to fool the other team. Here’s how to do an alley oop.
What You’ll Need:
Basketball
Basketball court with hoops
Uniform or loose fitting clothes
Basketball shoes
A teammate who has a high vertical leap
Procedure:
Discuss the game plan with your teammate. For this kind of offensive strategy, you have to find a trustworthy teammate. If he’s going to do the dunk, he must have a high vertical leap. Discuss how you’re going to signal the move to each other silently, and at which part of the game you’re going to execute it.
alley oop
Practice your dunk. You must be well acquainted with this move before you work on your alley oop. If you think your vertical leap isn’t as strong as that of your team mate, let him be the one to do the dunk.
Have your teammate get the ball from the other team. While running from the other side of the court, take your positions, on either side of the basket. Let your teammate dribble the ball, and make sure to make eye contact or give him the signal even before you reach the three point arch.
Slow down as you’re two or three feet away from the hoop.
At the other side, your teammate must toss the ball towards the basket, with a shot-like, arched soft motion. He should be aiming for the rim. At the same time, run and jump towards the rim, catching the ball in mid-air or after it hits and bounces from the backboard.
Dunk the ball. Do this with force and authority.
Land down on your feet gracefully. You can go back to playing defense.
A Few Tips
Unless you’re doing a reverse dunk, don’t run behind the backboard.
Don’t hang from the rim.
Trust your teammate. An alley oop won’t be successful if you don’t.
Surprise is an important element of this attack. The defensive team shouldn’t know about your alley oop.
Score points magnificently by dunking a perfect alley oop. It’ll make your opponent cringe, it’ll wow the crowd, and will make you proud.
