Steel shovels are the best. They have all the good qualities of a shovel with a wooden handle bar, and more. Steel shovels, for one thing, will last you a long, long time. Steel shovels might be a wee bit more expensive than the average wooden shovel, but like we said, it’s longevity of use that counts.
A steel shovel is crafted out of high quality steel. Most steel shovels have steel blades, steel handle bars, and wooden palm handles. The palm handle is made of wood so it isn’t too cold to the touch especially when winter season comes. This is the most common design. Some manufacturers, however, also incorporate steel palm handles into their other designs. Naturally this all steel design is tougher and much more resilient, but you should wear gloves if you plan to shovel snow with it.
Steel Verses Wood
Here are the different advantages and disadvantages of steel shovels over wooden shovels:
Steel shovels are heavier than wooden-made shovels, which is, of course, to be expected. People with back problems might want to think twice about choosing a steel shovel over the lighter wood shovel.
Depending the brand and manufacturer, some steel shovels may be prone to rust. A rusted steel shovel is as good as none. Make sure you buy only high quality steel shovels.
You don’t have to worry about wood shovels succumbing to rust. What you do have to worry about, however, is the wood losing its durability over time.
Try to consider these things before you make a choice. Will it be tough steel, or lighter wood?
