What is the speed of sound in the air ?

1 Answer

Answer :

A sound is a type of wave created by the vibration of matter. The sensation of hearing is created when this vibration is held in the human ear. These waves flow through gaseous , liquid and solid matter. Under normal conditions, the speed of sound flowing through the air is 8.1 miles per hour or 343.4 meters per second. As sound waves flow through matter, all particles of that matter begin to vibrate. Vibration once per second is called 1 Hz. Not all vibrations are caught in the human ear and do not create the feeling of hearing.

Description : Speed of sound in air depends on the - (1) Chemical conditions (2) Physical conditions (3) Pitch (4) None of these

Last Answer : (2) Physical conditions Explanation: Wind can increase or decrease the speed, and can even push sound waves sideways. Air density affects it. Temperature, pressure, humidity and gas mixture can each affect the density.

Description : Speed of sound in air is unaffected by change in : (1) Pressure (2) Humidity (3) Temperature (4) Volume

Last Answer : (1) Pressure Explanation: The speed of sound in air depends on the density of air and the density of air depends on the temperature. The speed of sound is unaffected by pressure. If the atmospheric pressure changes, the speed of sound in air remains constant.

Description : Speed of sound is the greatest in : (1) Water (2) Air (3) Glass (4) Glycerine

Last Answer : (3) Glass Explanation: Sound travels faster in liquids and non-porous solids than it does in air. It travels about 4.3 times as fast in water (1,484 m/s), and nearly 15 times as fast in iron (5,120 m/s), than in air at 20 degrees Celsius.
