What is electrolytic capacitor ?

1 Answer

Answer :

Electrolytic capacitors usually produce more capacitance in less space. The electrolytic used inside it helps in creating more capacitance. In this type of capacitor aluminum ( Al) metal foil and thin film dielectric are intertwined to form a cylindrical roll. The roll is then packed into a borax electrolytic aluminum container and two terminals are removed from the thin metal foil. This type of capacitor produces polar capacitance i.e. electrolytic capacitors have positive and negative terminals. Usually the long terminal of a new capacitor acts as a positive terminal. If both the terminals of the capacitor are equally long then the negative terminal can be identified by looking at the negative markings on it. The terminal that is closest to the side marked negative is the negative terminal. Note that electrolytic capacitors must be applied to the correct polarity when used in any circuit or the capacitor may explode and be damaged.
