Why does the volume of gaseous matter depend on pressure ?

Answer :

We know that in the case of solids and liquids the intermolecular distance is very small and in this case the expansion and contraction of the volume in the reduction and increase of pressure is so negligible that it can be ignored. But in the case of gaseous matter, the intermolecular distance is much greater than the molecular radius , so that it is possible to bring the molecules closer together by applying extra pressure. Therefore the volume of gaseous matter depends on the pressure of the gas.
