: SwitchMed Power Supply (SMPS) is a device that converts 230 volt power supply required for computer to regulated DC voltage. SMPS is commonly known as Power Supply Unit (PSU). It is a metal box in the upper corner of the computer case. It has a fan on the back , which is connected to the main power cord. The main function of PSU is to supply voltage. For example, 3.3 , 5 and 12 volts for computer components inside the cabin. Typically 3.3 and 5 volts are used in the main circuit's digital circuit circuit and 12 volts are used for motor , disc drive and fan operation. PSU is specified in watts. Since the supply should not be 100% loaded according to the capacity. PSUs with more capacity than what is required for a computer are always approved .
