Why do isotopes form a specific element ?

An atom of the same element with different mass numbers is called isotope of that element. That is, isotopes of an element have the same number of protons , but different numbers of neutrons. The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom uniquely identifies the element. But in principle an element can have any number of neutrons. The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an element is its mass. This is why the mass number of each isotope of an element is different. Thus isotopes are variants of a specific element.
