I've come across a fascinatingly cheap incident. It was 2012. I had just appeared for my 10th board exam. My birthday is on 6th April and my boards were over on 20th March. So I had planned for a party with my family at a local restaurant. But on 5th, one of my friends named Ritu Gurnani, decided to throw a post-exam party at her apartment. The girl belonged to a pretty sophisticated and rich background. During that time, it was only her who had an iPhone in her possession. She had also invited five-six of our classmates for the party. Her mum was pretty sweet and really a smart lady. Their apartment was one of those heights of designer chic. We chatted for awhile, until her mum called us in their living room and there, they surprised me with a Chocolate cake. It was like an advanced birthday party. Ritu and her mum handed me over with a small box wrapped cutely in red wrapper and her older brother gave me a hand made greeting card. They literally forced me to unwrap the gift and when I did, I found a box of Fastrack. Inside, there was a super cute baby pink watch, a price tag which was nearly torn, exposing the first two digits ‘19’ and a warranty card. My heart melted as that was my first ever gift from a 'friend'. That was that. A week passed and all of a sudden, the watch stopped working. I felt weird- a branded watch of Fastrack stopped working within a week. That was weird, man. My dad took me to the nearest Titan store and the guy assured that he'll repair it as soon as possible and that we'll have to wait for ten minutes. After two minutes, the guy came back to us with a smile of mockery. This was the conversation that took place between us: Me: What happened? Guy: (chuckling) This watch, from where did you buy it? Me: Oh, I didn't buy it. It was a birthday gift. Why? Guy: Just take a look at the brand name. (Shoving the watch towards me) Me: Why? I can't see anything usual. Guy: Take a closer look, madam. (Still chuckling) I obeyed. And was stunned. The brand name read- Faketrack. It was so like the real Fastrack logo and font. Me: But… (stammering) I… I don't understand. Guy: That's a fake item. Bought from a roadside stall. They sell these on footpaths. The person has just put a 40 bucks watch in her original Fastrack box with the warranty card so that you won't be able to know. I & my dad were shocked to see the mind behind such a cheap act. It did require a lot of brain-work to perform such an act. I just couldn't believe that a girl of fourteen could have such a cheap mind. Not only that, even her parents supported her to the fullest. Since then, I've always chuckled when I was with her, not letting her know that I already am aware of her action. PS: If she reads this now, she'll know that I already am aware of her fraudulent activity.
