Gandhiji was a great social reformer. He was against the caste system and considered untouchability to be a curse on the Hindu society. He called the untouchables. ‘Harijans’ and requested people to respect them like human beings. In fact he lived with them in their colonies. Under this guidance the congress adopted the programme for their upliftment. He even advanced for equal rights and status for women and inspired them to play an important role in the National Movement. He also introduced a new system of Basic Education wherein the children learnt some art so that they could earn while learning. He attached great importance to character building and acquiring skills and stressed upon simple and Moralistic life.
